Timber Decks & RailingsPost and beam decks utilizing heavy timber deck joists create an attractive area below the deck, and are popular where a deck covers a walk-out basement area. The support posts can be made continuous past the deck to anchor the deck railing, or the railing can be constructed independently using shorter lengths of 6x6 or 8x8 posts.

Covered Deck AreasA common design is to have an outdoor deck with at least a portion of the deck protected from the elements by a timbered roof. The use of timbers allows the ceiling to be vaulted to the roofline, creating an open and expansive space that nonetheless is still protected from the sun and rain. The exposed timber structure is then overlain with pre-finished tongue & groove decking to create a beautiful ceiling finish and structural roof panel in one step.
A different approach utilizes a post & beam system to support conventional roof trusses or framing lumber. In this system, the conventional framing is covered with a ceiling finish and is not visible. The result can be either a vaulted or flat ceiling, with the post & beam roof support being visible. |
